De jonge Nederlandse jazzzangeres Florieke de Geus zong onlangs nog een repertoire van even zwoele als pittige standards in Dizzy met haar Muller en De Geus Trio. Vanavond eert zij de Amerikaanse jazzzangeres Anita O’Day. Hoewel misschien niet zo beroemd als Peggy Lee of Billie Holliday, drukte O’Day, die haar carrière startte in het swingtijdperk van de jaren 30 en bleef zingen tot haar dood in 2006, haar eigen stempel op de 20ste eeuwse vocal jazz met haar expressieve en licht doorleefde zangstem. Zij zette menig standard naar haar hand, waarmee de Flora Jazz Group vanavond in haar voetsporen treedt.

The young Dutch jazz singer Florieke de Geus recently sang a repertoire of sultry and spicy standards in Dizzy with her Muller and De Geus Trio. Tonight she honors the American jazz singer Anita O’Day. While perhaps not as famous as Peggy Lee or Billie Holliday, O’Day – who started her career in the swing era of the 1930s and continued to sing until her death in 2006 – put her own mark on 20th century vocal jazz with her expressive and slightly lived singing voice. She set many standards to her will, with which the Flora Jazz Group is following in her footsteps tonight.
